DINO Expects Refining Tightness to Persist

CEO Franklin Myers said that disruptions affecting refining capacity in the Middle East and Russia, alongside reduced Chinese product exports, continued to constrain global fuel supplies. He expects a broader recovery to extend into 2028.

President and COO Steven Ledbetter told a UBS analyst that approximately 4 million barrels per day of refining production remained offline across the Middle East and Russia. He declined to specify when margins would normalize.

Refining adjusted EBITDA reached $2.58 billion, supported by elevated crack spreads and small-refinery exemptions. Ledbetter said that refinery capture excluding those exemptions was approximately 105%, reflecting improvements in reliability, product placement and yields.

HF Sinclair Explains RINs Benefit

A Wolfe Research analyst pressed management on how small-refinery exemptions translated into cash, noting their substantial contribution to quarterly results.

Acting CFO Vivek Garg explained that the exemptions reversed previously accrued compliance expenses. The company retained the resulting renewable identification numbers, or RINs, rather than selling them.

Consequently, the benefit lifted earnings but did not generate corresponding immediate cash flow. Ledbetter characterized it as a reduction in future compliance-related cash obligations.

DINO Updates Spending & Shareholder Returns

Garg revised 2026 capital spending expectations to approximately $725 million for sustaining capital and turnarounds, plus $150 million for growth investments.

For the fourth quarter, management expects crude runs of 560,000-600,000 barrels per day, reflecting the El Dorado refinery turnaround. The third-quarter crude charge averaged 614,060 barrels per day.

Ledbetter reaffirmed a 50% shareholder payout target. DINO returned $572 million through dividends and repurchases during the quarter, while Garg told a UBS analyst that the company expects to reach its target payout ratio for the year.

HF Sinclair Targets Western Market Connectivity

Ledbetter said that the first phase of Westline Connect could add 35,000 barrels per day of product transportation capacity from the Rockies into Utah and Nevada, with startup targeted for 2029.

Responding to a Barclays analyst, he said that the final investment decision had shifted to the first quarter of 2027 as management evaluated routing and project scope. He maintained a favorable assessment of the project's commercial rationale.

In response to BMO Capital Markets, Ledbetter said that Western Gateway complemented Westline Connect and would strengthen market access. He emphasized organic investment over major acquisitions, with projects funded through cash balances and the operating cash flow.

DINO Highlights Renewables Recovery

Renewables adjusted EBITDA increased to $109 million from a loss of $13 million a year earlier. Management attributed the improvement to stronger RINs pricing, producer tax credits and higher sales volumes.

Ledbetter told a TPH Research analyst that direct feedstock sourcing, market diversification beyond California and disciplined expenses had strengthened the business.

He said that renewable diesel utilization reached 72%, excluding the Cheyenne turnaround and identified utilization above 70% as an operating objective. Management maintained a favorable fourth-quarter outlook.

HF Sinclair Advances Lubricants Separation

Myers said that the company was progressing toward separating its Lubricants & Specialties business in 2027, alongside retiring base oil refining assets at Mississauga.

Senior vice president Matt Joyce told a Piper Sandler analyst that the standalone business was targeting operational readiness by early third-quarter 2027, including leadership, technology systems and operating agreements.

Addressing TD Cowen, Joyce said that a more flexible sourcing model and lower fixed costs were intended to offset some lost manufacturing contribution. Final capitalization remains under review, with management prioritizing financial flexibility.

DINO Maintains Disciplined Operating Focus

Ledbetter will become CEO on Jan. 1, 2027, with Myers transitioning to executive chairman for an initial period.

Management's emphasis remained on refinery reliability, selective growth and shareholder returns, while preparing the business mix for less dependence on unusually favorable refining margins.
