Shares of Franklin Financial Services Corporation (FRAF - Free Report) have risen 9% since reporting results for the third quarter of 2026, outperforming the S&P 500 index’s 0.6% return. Over the past month, the stock has gained 13% compared with the S&P 500’s 0.4% rise.

Franklin Financial reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $8.5 million, up 59.4% from $5.4 million in the year-ago quarter. Earnings per share increased to $1.89 from $1.19 in the prior-year quarter. Total revenues, comprising net interest income and non-interest income, rose 11.4% year over year to $25.6 million. Net interest income increased 11% to $20.2 million, while non-interest income grew to $5.4 million from $4.8 million in the prior-year quarter.

FRAF's Net Interest Margin & Operating Efficiency Improve

Franklin Financial's net interest margin expanded to 3.58% from 3.32% in the prior-year quarter, reflecting improved funding costs and a favorable deposit mix.

Total interest expenses declined to $9.6 million from $11.5 million in the prior-year quarter, primarily reflecting lower deposit costs. Interest income remained relatively stable at $29.8 million, as higher loan income was partially offset by reduced investment portfolio earnings.

Non-interest expenses declined 5% year over year to $14.4 million due to lower employee benefit expenses related to health insurance.

The efficiency ratio improved to 55.69% from 65.19%, indicating stronger expense management relative to revenues.

Return on average assets increased to 1.43% from 0.93%, while return on average equity improved to 18.53% from 13.39%.

Franklin Financial's Loans & Deposits Expand

Total assets reached $2.37 billion as of Sept. 30, 2026, increasing 5.6% from the 2025-end level.

Net loans increased 4.1% to $1.60 billion from the end of 2025, driven by growth of $44.8 million in commercial real estate loans and $49.2 million in residential mortgage loans. However, commercial and industrial loans declined $28.4 million.

Total deposits increased 6.6% year over year to $1.957 billion, supported primarily by growth in non-interest-bearing checking and money management accounts.

Non-interest-bearing checking deposits represented 19.4% of total deposits compared with 16.9% at the end of 2025.

The company's wealth management business generated $2.4 million in quarterly fees, increasing 7.1% year over year. Assets under management totaled $1.471 billion at the quarter-end.

FRAF's Credit Quality Remains Concerning

Despite stronger profitability, Franklin Financial experienced deterioration in certain credit quality indicators.

Non-performing loans increased to $17.8 million as of Sept. 30, 2026, from $8.5 million at the end of 2025. These represented 1.11% of gross loans compared with 0.55% at 2025-end.

The increase primarily reflected three commercial real estate loans totaling $17.5 million involving two unrelated borrowers.

The company maintained a $1.2-million specific reserve against a troubled commercial construction loan and a $628,000 reserve against another commercial real estate exposure.

Meanwhile, the quarterly provision for credit losses on loans reflected an $867,000 reversal compared with $1.3 million in expenses a year earlier, supported by recoveries and lower historical loss assumptions.

However, provisions for unfunded commitments totaled $1.4 million, reflecting a $1.5-million reserve established against a letter of credit associated with the troubled construction loan.

FRAF's Performance Strengthens

For the first nine months of 2026, net income increased 43.5% year over year to $21.8 million, while earnings rose to $4.84 per share from $3.39 in the prior-year period.

Net interest income increased 13.8% to $58.1 million, while non-interest income advanced 10.2% to $15.9 million.

The nine-month net interest margin improved to 3.54% from 3.20%, reflecting sustained funding cost improvements.

Nevertheless, elevated commercial real estate exposure and rising non-performing loans remain important considerations for future profitability.

Other Developments

On Oct. 15, 2026, Franklin Financial's board declared a quarterly cash dividend of 34 cents per share, payable Nov. 25 to shareholders of record as of Nov. 6.

Additionally, the company repurchased 14,950 shares in the first nine months of 2026 under its previously approved 150,000-share repurchase program.
