CFO Gary Fischer attributed the improvement to higher indium phosphide demand, favorable product mix and increasing manufacturing efficiencies. Non-GAAP gross margin expanded to 56.1% from 45% in the preceding quarter.

AXT Projects Strong Q4 Earnings

Fischer said approximately $90 million in fourth-quarter revenues are supported by existing export permits or shipments requiring no permits.

Management projected fourth-quarter non-GAAP earnings of 57-59 cents per share and GAAP earnings of 56-58 cents.

Non-GAAP operating expenses are expected to reach approximately $13 million, compared with $14 million on a GAAP basis. Fischer emphasized that future margin improvements depend on product mix, manufacturing efficiency and production volumes.

AXTI Backlog Exceeds $500M Amid Supply Constraints

CEO Morris Young highlighted a backlog exceeding $500 million, comprising multiyear supply agreements, shorter-term contracts and spot purchase orders.

Vice president of Business Development Timothy Bettles said customers remain on allocation as demand continues to exceed available production capacity.

Responding to a Northland Capital Markets analyst, Bettles clarified that long-term supply agreements represent a relatively small portion of backlog. Fischer emphasized retaining contractual flexibility to protect pricing and production commitments.

AXT Accelerates Indium Phosphide Production Expansion

Young said the company surpassed its initial 2026 capacity-doubling target in August, supported by manufacturing improvements and increased demand.

Fischer indicated that indium phosphide capacity could reach approximately 2.75-3 times its year-end 2025 level by the end of 2026. Management is targeting another doubling during 2027.

During discussions with a Needham analyst, Bettles dismissed near-term overcapacity concerns, citing customer demand exceeding planned additions. Fischer expressed confidence in capital spending requirements through 2028 while emphasizing continued evaluation beyond that period.

AXTI Targets Higher Margins Through Larger Wafers

Management identified larger-diameter substrates, improved crystal-growth technology and stronger pricing as important profitability drivers.

Responding to a Craig-Hallum analyst, Fischer indicated that gross margins could move above 60% in the fourth quarter, supported by higher production volumes and operating efficiencies.

During a Wedbush Securities exchange, Bettles highlighted the transition toward 4-inch indium phosphide wafers during 2027. Young also emphasized progress in 6-inch production, which remains an emerging contributor to future growth.

AXT Advances AI Connectivity and Tongmei Funding

Young identified accelerating deployment of 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers as important demand drivers for indium phosphide substrates.

Management also highlighted opportunities involving near-packaged and co-packaged optics, alongside expanding demand from Chinese AI infrastructure customers.

Fischer discussed Tongmei's proposed private equity financing of up to $545 million to support substrate and raw-material capacity expansion. AXT would retain approximately 73.4% ownership following completion at the maximum investment amount.

AXTI Prioritizes Execution Amid Accelerating Demand

Management maintained a confident outlook centered on manufacturing expansion, improved productivity and higher-value semiconductor substrates.

Young emphasized meeting customer requirements, while Fischer reinforced the importance of disciplined capacity investments, favorable product mix and operational flexibility as production scales.

AXT’s Zacks Rank & Style Scores Signal Mixed Prospects

AXTI currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), reflecting a neutral near-term outlook under Zacks' earnings-estimate-revision-based ranking framework.

The stock has a Growth Score of B, indicating relatively favorable growth characteristics. However, its Value Score of F, Momentum Score of D and combined VGM Score of D indicate less favorable valuation, price momentum and overall style characteristics.

Zacks generally favors stocks with a Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy) and Style Scores of A or B. AXTI's ratings therefore present mixed signals despite its strong reported operating performance. The Zacks Rank can change as analysts revise earnings estimates following the third-quarter results.
