Earnings & Revenue Performance

Preformed Line Products reported third-quarter 2026 net sales of $209.5 million, up 18% from $178.1 million in the year-ago quarter. Earnings per share skyrocketed 572% to $3.56 from 53 cents a year earlier. Excluding the prior-year U.S. pension plan termination charges, adjusted earnings per share increased 70%. Net income jumped 587% to $18 million in the third quarter of 2026, supported by higher sales volumes, favorable product mix, pricing actions and improved operating leverage.

PLPC's Key Business Metrics

Gross profit increased 32% to $70 million from $52.8 million in the prior-year quarter. The gross margin expanded 370 basis points to 33.4%, reflecting improved profitability across all geographical segments.

Operating income climbed to $24.9 million from $13.1 million in the prior-year quarter. However, selling expenses increased to $15 million from $13.3 million in the prior-year quarter, while general and administrative expenses rose to $22.5 million from $19.1 million.

The operating cash flow increased 95% year over year to $36.8 million, its highest quarterly level since the third quarter of 2023. The free cash flow rose to $10.2 million from $8.5 million but declined sequentially from $18.3 million due to higher capital expenditure.

The company ended Sept. 30, 2026, with $99.3 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash compared with $83.4 million at 2025-end. Available credit totaled $53.9 million.

PLPC's Segmental Performance

Energy revenues increased 28% year over year to $157.1 million, supported by strong transmission and distribution demand. PLP-USA energy sales grew 46%, while Asia-Pacific energy revenues increased 28%, benefiting from substation market strength.

Communications revenues declined to $39.8 million from $41 million, reflecting orders shifted into the first half of 2026 from the third and fourth quarters.

Special Industries revenues decreased to $12.6 million from $14.2 million, primarily reflecting softness in PLP-USA and EMEA service-related and other industrial markets.

PLP-USA's gross margin improved 700 basis points to 36.3%. Margins also increased in the Americas, EMEA and the Asia-Pacific segments, highlighting broad-based profitability improvements despite uneven end-market demand.

Factors Influencing PLPC's Performance

Strong domestic energy infrastructure demand remained the principal growth driver. PLP-USA generated more than $100 million in quarterly sales for the second consecutive quarter, benefiting from transmission and distribution investments.

Pricing increases implemented during 2025 and early 2026, favorable product mix and fixed-cost leverage supported profitability. Foreign currency translation contributed $3.1 million to quarterly revenues and $0.4 million to net income.

However, higher personnel investments, selling and freight expenses partially offset these benefits. Tariffs and commodity costs continued to pressure profitability, while weaker Communications and Special Industries demand constrained overall growth.

PLPC's Management Commentary & Outlook

Executive chairman Rob Ruhlman described the quarter as another exceptional period, with sales and earnings approaching the records established in the preceding quarter.

Ruhlman emphasized that investments in domestic manufacturing, engineering capabilities and personnel have strengthened PLPC's competitive position amid robust U.S. energy demand.

Management highlighted $68.1 million in operating cash flow generated during the first nine months, providing financial flexibility for facility investments, targeted acquisitions and shareholder distributions.

Although management expressed confidence in sustaining operating momentum, it acknowledged persistent tariff pressures and geopolitical uncertainty.

Other Developments

PLPC purchased a Canadian facility for $16.7 million in July 2026 to expand manufacturing capacity and support growth. The company subsequently entered a $10.6-million term loan to refinance the facility purchase.

The May 2026 acquisition of Delta Star Conetores Electricos Ltda contributed $2.6 million to third-quarter sales, supporting the company's expansion in international energy markets.
