Trio-Tech Upgraded to Outperform on Backlog Growth & Strong Liquidity

Read MoreHide Full Article

Trio-Tech International (TRT - Free Report) , recently upgraded to “Outperform” from “Neutral,” is entering a stronger operating phase as growing backlog provides improved revenue visibility. The company is also expanding beyond AI into automotive semiconductor applications, supported by new multiyear contracts and additional testing capacity. At the same time, a strong balance sheet and improving cash generation are strengthening its financial position, while the Industrial Electronics (IE) business is showing signs of recovery. Although margin pressures and execution risks remain, these developments suggest TRT's growth prospects are becoming more favorable than when the stock carried a Neutral rating.

TRT's Growing Backlog Strengthens Revenue Visibility

Trio-Tech exited fiscal 2026 with a backlog of $24.2 million compared with $11 million a year earlier. Growth was primarily driven by Semiconductor Back-end Solutions, reflecting increased demand for burn-in equipment and reliability testing services.

Order momentum has continued, supported by AI-related semiconductor programs and new automotive contracts. These developments provide a stronger foundation for future revenues as existing orders move toward delivery and expanded testing capacity becomes operational.

Trio-Tech Expands Beyond AI

TRT is expanding into automotive semiconductor applications, reducing its reliance on AI-related demand. Recent multiyear contracts with automotive semiconductor customers cover production burn-in services, customized equipment and technical support, strengthening its presence in EV applications.

The company is also expanding testing capacity in Malaysia to support growing customer requirements. These initiatives broaden TRT's opportunities across automotive electronics, high-performance computing and other advanced semiconductor markets.

TRT's Balance Sheet Supports Financial Flexibility

Trio-Tech ended fiscal 2026 with approximately $28.5 million in cash, deposits and restricted deposits, supported by relatively modest bank borrowings. Its liquidity position improved considerably from the preceding year, providing greater flexibility to fund expansion and operating requirements.

Working capital also strengthened, allowing the company to support growing customer orders and capacity investments. This financial flexibility is particularly important as TRT expands its semiconductor testing operations and pursues additional growth opportunities.

Trio-Tech's Improving Cash Flow

TRT generated $3.4 million in operating cash flow during fiscal 2026 compared with $0.4 million in the prior year. Stronger business activity and improved collections contributed to the increase, reflecting better cash conversion alongside revenue growth.

Improving internal cash generation could help TRT fund equipment purchases, capacity expansion and working capital requirements. Combined with its substantial liquidity, this strengthens the company's ability to pursue growth without excessive reliance on external financing.

TRT's IE Business Shows Signs of Recovery

Trio-Tech's IE business is showing early signs of recovery, supported by improving aerospace-related product sales and distribution activity. Fiscal 2026 revenues increased 15.3% despite uneven quarterly demand, suggesting a gradual improvement in underlying business conditions.

More recently, IE recorded approximately $4.6 million in early fiscal 2027 bookings across aerospace, display solutions and industrial markets. Stronger order activity, alongside opportunities in data center cooling and energy efficiency, could support further recovery in this higher-margin business.

Trio-Tech's Valuation Supports Upside Potential

TRT's valuation provides an encouraging entry point for investors seeking exposure to its improving growth prospects. The stock's relatively modest pricing suggests that its expanding backlog, business diversification and strengthening financial position may not be fully reflected in its market valuation.

As new contracts translate into revenues and operating profitability improves, investors could benefit from greater market recognition of Trio-Tech's growth potential. While execution risks and margin pressures remain, the company's improving fundamentals could support a favorable reassessment of its valuation over time.

TRT's Key Challenges and Risks

Trio-Tech continues to face margin pressures as lower-margin semiconductor testing services account for a larger share of revenues. Despite strong revenue growth, consolidated operating profitability weakened during fiscal 2026, reflecting higher expenses and an unfavorable business mix.

Customer concentration also remains a concern, while the expansion of testing capacity in Malaysia introduces execution risks. Future performance will depend on sustained customer demand, efficient capacity utilization and improved profitability across its operations.

Trio-Tech's Structural Positioning and Outlook

Trio-Tech's operating profile could strengthen as its growing backlog converts into revenues and new automotive semiconductor contracts support business diversification. Additional testing capacity and expanding customer relationships provide opportunities for sustained growth beyond AI.

At the same time, stronger liquidity, improving operating cash flows and encouraging developments in the higher-margin IE business are supporting its financial outlook. While profitability pressures and execution risks remain, these improvements provide a stronger foundation for TRT's growth.
