Headquartered in Houston, TX, the firm is focused on the Permian Basin, Marcellus Shale and Anadarko Basin. The company reached its current form following the October 2021 merger between Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation and Cimarex Energy Co.
In the Permian Basin — America's hottest and lowest-cost shale region spread over west Texas and southeastern New Mexico — Coterra’s position consists of approximately 296,000 net acres, primarily targeting the Upper Wolfcamp and Bone Spring formations. The company’s average daily production from the Permian basin totaled 233 thousand barrels of oil equivalent (Mboe) in 2023. Of this, 66% was liquids, while the remaining 34% was natural gas.
Coterra owns some 186,000 net acres in the gas-producing Marcellus Shale of the Appalachian Basin. Mainly located in Susquehanna County, in Pennsylvania, the company churned out 2,263 million cubic feet (MMCF) on a daily basis in 2023 — 100% natural gas.
Meanwhile, Coterra Energy’s footprint in Oklahoma’s Anadarko shale extends to 182,000 net acres. Currently focused on the Woodford Shale in Western Oklahoma, average volumes from these properties came in at 56 Mboe last year, of which natural gas constituted 54%.
Apart from exploration and production activities, Coterra Energy operates various natural gas gathering and saltwater gathering and disposal systems in Texas.
At Dec 31, 2023, Coterra Energy's total estimated proved reserves were 249,213 thousand barrels (MBbls) of oil, 317,456 MBbls of natural gas liquids (NGL) and 10,525 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas, totaling 2,320,757 Mboe — 78% natural gas, 76% developed. During 2023, the company reported an average production of 697.4 Mboe per day (74% natural gas).
The company generated revenues of $5.9 billion from its operations in 2023. Coterra, which aims to maintain consistent, profitable growth across basins and various price scenarios, spent around $2.1 billion on drilling and completion capital expenditures in 2023.
