Fund Description
The fund was incepted in January 1984 and is managed by Dreyfus Corporation. The fund seeks long-term capital growth consistent with the preservation of capital. Its secondary goal is current income. The fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in the common stock of U.S. and foreign companies. The fund focuses on 'blue-chip' companies with total market values of more than $5 billion. These established companies have demonstrated sustained patterns of profitability, strong balance sheets, an expanding global presence and the potential to achieve predictable, above-average earnings growth. The fund employs a 'buy-and-hold' investment strategy, and seeks to keep annual portfolio turnover below 15%. As a result, the fund invests for long-term growth rather than short-term profits. Dividends and capital gains are distributed annually.
