Fund Description
The fund was incepted in September 1977 and is managed by the Vanguard Group. The fund seeks income exempt from federal income tax. The fund holds high-quality, tax-exempt, municipal securities with a combined average maturity of 7 to 12 years. At least 75% of the bonds it holds are in the top three credit-rating categories, and no more than 20% of assets may be invested in bonds rated Baa (by Moody's Investors Service, Inc.) or BBB (by Standard & Poor's Corporation). The remaining 5% may be invested in securities with lower ratings or that are unrated. The fund pursues a higher level of income than that provided by comparable funds. Dividends are distributed monthly and capital gains, if any, are distributed in December.
