Is Vident U.S. Equity Strategy ETF (VUSE) a Strong ETF Right Now?

Read MoreHide Full Article

The Vident U.S. Equity Strategy ETF (VUSE - Free Report) was launched on 01/22/2014, and is a smart beta exchange traded fund designed to offer broad exposure to the Style Box - All Cap Value category of the market.

What Are Smart Beta ETFs?

Products that are based on market cap weighted indexes, which are strategies designed to reflect a specific market segment or the market as a whole, have traditionally dominated the ETF industry.

Market cap weighted indexes work great for investors who believe in market efficiency. They provide a low-cost, convenient and transparent way of replicating market returns.

There are some investors, though, who think it's possible to beat the market with great stock selection; this group likely invests in another class of funds known as smart beta, which track non-cap weighted strategies.

These indexes attempt to select stocks that have better chances of risk-return performance, based on certain fundamental characteristics or a combination of such characteristics.

Methodologies like equal-weighting, one of the simplest options out there, fundamental weighting, and volatility/momentum based weighting are all choices offered to investors in this space, but not all of them can deliver superior returns.

Fund Sponsor & Index

The fund is sponsored by Vident Financial. It has amassed assets over $664.78 million, making it one of the larger ETFs in the Style Box - All Cap Value. VUSE, before fees and expenses, seeks to match the performance of the Vident Core U.S. Equity Fund Index.

The Vident U.S. Quality Index is a rules-based, systematic strategy index comprised of equity securities principally traded in the U.S. market of issuers domiciled in the United States.

Cost & Other Expenses

Cost is an important factor in selecting the right ETF, and cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive cousins if all other fundamentals are the same.

Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.50%, making it on par with most peer products in the space.

The fund has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 0.46%.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

While ETFs offer diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk, a deep look into a fund's holdings is a valuable exercise. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

VUSE's heaviest allocation is in the Information Technology sector, which is about 33.7% of the portfolio. Its Financials and Consumer Discretionary round out the top three.

Taking into account individual holdings, Broadcom Inc (AVGO) accounts for about 2.62% of the fund's total assets, followed by Alphabet Inc (GOOGL) and Nvidia Corp (NVDA).

VUSE's top 10 holdings account for about 22.27% of its total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

Year-to-date, the Vident U.S. Equity Strategy ETF has added roughly 5.33% so far, and was up about 13.48% over the last 12 months (as of 06/11/2026). VUSE has traded between $60.41 $72.82 in this past 52-week period.

The ETF has a beta of 0.94 and standard deviation of 14.64% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 128 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk .

Alternatives

Vident U.S. Equity Strategy ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Style Box - All Cap Value segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.

Fidelity High Dividend ETF (FDVV) tracks Fidelity Core Dividend Index and the iShares Core S&P U.S. Value ETF (IUSV) tracks S&P 900 Value Index. Fidelity High Dividend ETF has $9.63 billion in assets, iShares Core S&P U.S. Value ETF has $25.93 billion. FDVV has an expense ratio of 0.15% and IUSV changes 0.04%.

Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the Style Box - All Cap Value
