FCEL Targets Hydrogen Growth With Versatile Tri-gen Platform

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • FuelCell Energy's Tri-gen platform produces hydrogen, electricity and water from one system.
  • Tri-gen can run on natural gas or renewable biogas while recycling water for other uses.
  • FuelCell Energy's technology supports vehicle fueling and industrial operations at customer sites.

FuelCell Energy (FCEL - Free Report) is building its hydrogen business around systems that can produce several useful forms of energy at the same time. Its Tri-gen platform can generate hydrogen, electricity and water from a single system. It uses natural gas or renewable biogas to produce hydrogen, while generating power and heat. FuelCell Energy believes this combined approach could lower costs and reduce the environmental impact compared with existing alternatives.

Beyond simply producing hydrogen, FCEL’s Tri-gen platform is designed to make better use of the resources going into the system. It can operate on either natural gas or renewable biogas, and the water created during the process can be recycled for other purposes. For transportation, renewable biogas can be used to produce hydrogen, electricity and water for vehicle fueling stations. The fuel-cell process also produces virtually no nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) or particulate-matter emissions, which can help improve local air quality.

The technology can serve both transportation and manufacturing needs. At Toyota’s Port of Long Beach site, FuelCell Energy’s Tri-gen system supplies hydrogen for zero-emission passenger vehicles and Class 8 trucks while also producing electricity and water.  In manufacturing, the system can provide electricity, useful heat and hydrogen for industrial operations. Producing hydrogen directly at a facility can also reduce the need to buy and transport it from elsewhere.  Together, these features give FCEL a flexible hydrogen platform that can support both industrial users and transportation applications.

As hydrogen adoption expands, the focus will increasingly shift from individual projects to broader ecosystems that can support production, storage, transportation and end use. Companies with infrastructure and technology spanning multiple parts of the value chain are therefore becoming increasingly important to the development of the hydrogen economy.

Building a More Integrated Hydrogen Ecosystem

Linde plc (LIN - Free Report) has built a broad hydrogen presence spanning production, processing, storage, distribution and applications. Linde operates the world’s largest liquid hydrogen capacity and distribution system, along with roughly 1,000 kilometers of hydrogen pipelines. Linde also has close to 200 hydrogen refueling stations and 80 hydrogen electrolysis plants worldwide, supporting customers across the hydrogen value chain.

Meanwhile, Plug Power (PLUG - Free Report) is building an end-to-end green hydrogen ecosystem. Plug Power provides electrolyzers and capabilities needed to liquefy, store, transport, dispense and convert hydrogen into carbon-free electricity. Plug Power also offers hydrogen liquefiers and mobile cryogenic solutions, while its Georgia plant has completed its first customer fill of liquid green hydrogen, demonstrating progress toward operational hydrogen supply.
