STNG Stock Has Gained 21.5% in 3 Months: Can the Rally Continue Now?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Scorpio Tankers' shares gained 21.5% in three months as stronger earnings and liquidity supported the rally.
  • STNG cut funding costs and cash breakeven, while holding more than $1.9 billion in cash in July.
  • Scorpio Tankers is selling older vessels and reinvesting in newer, more fuel-efficient ships.

Scorpio Tankers Inc.'s (STNG - Free Report) shares have gained 21.5% over the past three months, putting the sustainability of the advance in focus. Better operating results, a substantially stronger balance sheet and supportive product-tanker fundamentals provide backing for the move. Still, freight-rate volatility and the industry's cyclical earnings profile leave meaningful risks. Owing to the impressive price increase, Scorpio Tankers has outshone fellow shipping companies like Global Ship Lease (GSL - Free Report) and Star Bulk Carriers (SBLK - Free Report) . The Zacks Transportation-Shipping industry has performed even better.

The question now is whether Scorpio Tankers' financial flexibility and fleet-renewal strategy can sustain momentum as tanker-market conditions evolve.

STNG Earnings Strength Supports the Bull Case

Scorpio Tankers' latest results provide a solid fundamental backdrop. Second-quarter 2026 earnings of $4.68 per share surged 231.9% year over year and topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.51. Revenues reached $391.8 million and also exceeded the consensus mark of $380 million.

Operating conditions were particularly favorable during the quarter. Scorpio Tankers generated adjusted EBITDA of $300.5 million and adjusted net income of $243.7 million. Management described the period as the strongest quarter in the company's history.

Product-tanker fundamentals also remain supportive. Longer trade routes caused by refinery dislocation can lift ton-mile demand, while an aging fleet and sanctioned tonnage constrain effective vessel supply. These factors can support utilization and freight rates even when underlying cargo volumes fluctuate.

Scorpio Tankers Has More Financial Flexibility

Balance-sheet improvement gives Scorpio Tankers greater room to manage the next downturn in tanker rates. During the second quarter, the company issued $605 million of convertible notes carrying a 1.75% coupon, with the combined issuances producing a yield to maturity below 1%. It also prepaid $389.1 million of secured debt and subsequently redeemed $200 million of 7.5% senior unsecured notes.

Those actions have lowered funding costs and cash breakeven levels. Management said its daily cash breakeven was below $11,000, the lowest in the company's history. Scorpio Tankers also had more than $1.9 billion in cash in July, providing substantial capacity to absorb weaker freight markets, invest in vessels and return capital to its shareholders.

That liquidity is important because fleet investment will consume capital. Remaining newbuilding and joint-venture commitments totaled about $978 million in July. The balance sheet provides considerable capacity to meet those obligations, but future free cash flow will still depend partly on tanker rates and disciplined capital deployment.

STNG Fleet Renewal Could Extend Operating Gains

Scorpio Tankers has been using high secondhand vessel values to refresh its fleet. Management said it had sold 19 vessels since the beginning of 2026 as of its July earnings call, with most of those ships 11 or 12 years old. The company has been reinvesting in newer, more fuel-efficient vessels that could lower maintenance requirements and support compliance with tighter environmental standards.

The economics of recent asset sales have also been favorable. Management noted that its last four LR2 sales at the time of the call were completed at prices above the cost of LR2 newbuildings already on order. That approach allows STNG to monetize aging assets while renewing the fleet rather than simply expanding capacity.

The trade-off is higher capital spending. Newbuilding commitments extend over several years, so fleet renewal will compete with dividends, repurchases and other uses of cash. Maintaining strong liquidity therefore remains an important part of the strategy.

Scorpio Tankers Still Faces a Cyclical Test

The main challenge is that tanker earnings can change quickly. Scorpio Tankers has substantial exposure to spot-oriented pools and spot charters, making revenues and cash flows sensitive to prevailing freight rates. Higher vessel deliveries could also pressure utilization and charter rates if fleet growth exceeds vessel retirements and scrapping.

Route normalization presents another risk. Longer voyages have supported ton-mile demand, but a reversal of geopolitical disruptions could shorten shipping distances. Weaker refined-product demand would add another source of pressure.

STNG's EPS Linearity of 46.7% over the 10-year observation period illustrates an uneven earnings pattern. Although the measure is above the industry's 43.1%, it remains well below the 100% ideal baseline. 10-year EPS growth of 30.3% exceeds the industry's 24%, indicating that the bigger issue is the variability of earnings through tanker cycles rather than the absence of long-term growth.

STNG Momentum Is Strong but Growth Signals Are Mixed

Scorpio Tankers currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Its Momentum Score of A and VGM Score of A fit with the stock's recent price strength, while the Value Score of B provides another favorable signal. The Growth Score of C is more measured. The Zacks Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank by assessing Value, Growth and Momentum characteristics, with the VGM Score combining those factors.

STNG's rally therefore has support from stronger earnings, ample liquidity, lower financing costs and fleet renewal. The counterweight is the tanker industry's inherent cyclicality: spot rates, vessel supply and trade-route patterns can change rapidly. The mix of a Zacks Rank #3, favorable Momentum and VGM Scores and a more moderate Growth Score captures that balance after the recent share-price advance.
