How much a stock's price changes over time is important for most investors, since price performance can both impact your investment portfolio and help you compare investment results across sectors and industries.

Another factor that can influence investors is FOMO, or the fear of missing out, especially with tech giants and popular consumer-facing stocks.

What if you'd invested in Phillips 66 (PSX - Free Report) ten years ago? It may not have been easy to hold on to PSX for all that time, but if you did, how much would your investment be worth today?

Phillips 66's Business In-Depth

With that in mind, let's take a look at Phillips 66's main business drivers.

Based in Houston, TX, Phillips 66 is a diversified and integrated energy company established following the 2012 spin-off of ConocoPhillips' downstream operations. As of second-quarter 2026, the company’s Refining segment included 10 refineries in the United States and Europe, with worldwide crude oil capacity of about 2.0 million barrels per day.

Over the years, the company has increased its focus on midstream, renewables and chemicals. Phillips 66 continues to streamline its asset portfolio and invest in growth opportunities across its operating businesses.

The company’s portfolio includes Midstream, Chemicals, Refining, Marketing and Specialties, and Renewable Fuels businesses. Its liquids infrastructure connects supplies of crude oil and natural gas liquids with refining, petrochemical, export and marketing demand. Its commercial platform sources feedstocks, manages logistics and delivers products across its asset base.

Phillips 66 is advancing investments in renewable fuels as part of its lower-carbon strategy. The Renewable Fuels segment includes the company’s renewable-fuel activities and related assets.

The company also divests non-core assets and reallocates capital toward strategic priorities. Its recent portfolio actions include retail asset sales in Germany and Austria. It previously sold Coop Mineraloel and ceased fuel production at the Los Angeles refinery in fourth-quarter 2025 as the site entered the idling process. In April 2026, Phillips 66 completed the acquisition of Lindsey Oil Refinery and logistics assets to enhance its integrated U.K. business.

Phillips 66 purchases crude oil and other feedstocks for its refining operations. Its Refining business processes these inputs into transportation fuels and other products, while Marketing and Specialties sells refined products through its marketing channels.

The company’s Midstream activities include transportation, storage, processing, fractionation and export infrastructure for crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. Its Chemicals business is conducted through Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, which produces olefins and polyolefins for customers

Bottom Line

While anyone can invest, building a lucrative investment portfolio takes research, patience, and a little bit of risk. If you had invested in Phillips 66 ten years ago, you're probably feeling pretty good about your investment today.

A $1000 investment made in October 2016 would be worth $3,698.42, or a 269.84% gain, as of October 14, 2026, according to our calculations. Investors should note that this return excludes dividends but includes price increases.

The S&P 500 rose 266.01% and the price of gold increased 219.76% over the same time frame in comparison.

Going forward, analysts are expecting more upside for PSX.

Phillips 66 merits an Outperform view as its integrated refining, midstream, chemicals, marketing and renewable fuels platform provides multiple cash-flow engines and commercial flexibility. Refining execution and constrained product supply support margins, while midstream expansion and portfolio actions broaden earnings capacity. Recent estimate trends reinforce the earnings recovery. Rapid debt reduction and cash realization also create room for higher shareholder returns. Management continues to target further cost and earnings gains across its strategic horizon. Risks remain from refining and chemical cyclicality, derivative swings, remaining debt and renewable-fuels policy uncertainty. Even so, operating execution, balance-sheet progress and visible infrastructure growth support the favorable long-term thesis.

The stock is up 10.49% over the past four weeks, and no earnings estimate has gone lower in the past two months, compared to 7 higher, for fiscal 2026. The consensus estimate has moved up as well.
