Neocloud ETF Down 30% YTD Despite Strong Demand: Here's Why

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Neocloud ETF NCLD is down about 30% YTD despite surging demand for AI computing capacity.
  • Capital shortages, heavy spending and debt concerns are weighing on neocloud stocks.
  • Multi-year contracts and rising data center investment offer long-term growth potential.

In the artificial Intelligence (AI) world, neocloud is an emerging concept with strong growth potential. A neocloud is a specialized cloud infrastructure provider focused on AI, machine learning (ML) and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads.

Unlike traditional cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, which offer a broad range of computing services, neoclouds specialize in providing scalable and cost-effective GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS), allowing businesses to access graphics processing units (GPUs) for AI training and inference without having to build their own infrastructure.

NVIDIA CEO Says Neocloud Demand Is Surging, but Capital Is Scarce

NVIDIA (NVDA - Free Report) CEO Jensen Huang said demand for neocloud companies is soaring, but limited access to capital is keeping the industry from expanding fast enough to meet the AI sector's growing needs.

Speaking to CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal on the sidelines of NVIDIA’s GTC conference in Berlin on Oct. 22, Huang described demand for neocloud services as exceptionally strong, highlighting their advanced capabilities. However, he noted that funding remains a major bottleneck.

According to Huang, the lack of capital is creating challenges for companies seeking to scale their AI infrastructure. He expressed confidence that the funding gap would eventually be addressed.

Neocloud Stocks Face Investor Concerns

Despite strong demand prospects, neocloud stocks have recently come under pressure as investors question the scale of spending on AI infrastructure and the time required to generate returns on those investments. Roundhill Neocloud ETF (NCLD - Free Report) is down about 30% this year.

CoreWeave (CRWV - Free Report) , one of the leading neocloud providers, has drawn particular scrutiny over its reliance on debt to finance its data center expansion. Concerns about rising borrowing costs and delayed returns have weighed on investor sentiment across the industry (read: Are Concerns Over CoreWeave's Debt Overblown? ETFs in Focus)

CRWV shares are down 36% over the past month (as of Oct. 22, 2026). The recent weakness highlights the tension between strong long-term demand for AI computing capacity and concerns about the substantial capital required to build and operate the necessary infrastructure.

Beyond financing, energy availability is another significant hurdle for the AI industry, particularly in Europe, where electricity costs are higher and power resources are constrained.

Is There Any Silver Lining?

Neocloud providers normally lock in multi-year compute contracts, generating a steadier, more predictable revenue stream than the on-demand model of traditional cloud.

Morgan Stanley estimates roughly $2.9 trillion in global data center construction through 2028, driven by compute demand that vastly exceeds supply. The firm believes credit markets — led by private credit, with support from corporate credit and securitized markets — will play a crucial role in meeting this demand.

Morgan Stanley remains bullish on the return potential of private credit and data center asset-backed securities (ABS) and commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS). It also noted that corporate bond issuance should remain manageable and consist mostly of higher-quality debt.

Bottom Line

Despite strong AI demand, NCLD faces funding, debt and AAI payoff concerns, but rising data center investment should offer long-term growth potential. Morgan Stanley sees opportunities in private credit and data center ABS/CMBS to finance rising infrastructure demand.
