Key Takeaways

  • SIMO expects at least 40% revenue growth in 2027, driven by enterprise storage and automotive expansion.
  • Silicon Motion's seven MonTitan customers remain on track for commercial production ramps during 2026.
  • SIMO's automotive and enterprise boot drive solutions grew over 75% sequentially, exceeding 40% of Q3 sales.

Silicon Motion Technology Corporation (SIMO - Free Report) outlined an ambitious growth outlook during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, emphasizing expanding opportunities in enterprise storage, automotive applications and AI infrastructure.

Management expects revenue to grow at least 40% in 2027, supported by customer design wins, improving product mix and rising demand for specialized storage solutions, despite persistent weakness in consumer markets.

SIMO Projects Strong Growth Through 2027

Fourth-quarter revenues are expected between $588 million and $616 million, representing sequential growth of 5% to 10%. Non-GAAP gross margin is expected between 54% and 55%, with operating margin reaching 36% to 37%.

For 2027, revenue growth is expected to be at least 40%, with gross margins remaining in the low-to-mid-50% range. Management anticipates continued operating leverage as enterprise and automotive products contribute more revenue.

During the quarter, revenues reached $560 million, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $532.8 million. Adjusted earnings of $4.35 per ADS surpassed the consensus estimate of $3.30.

Silicon Motion Sees Enterprise Storage Momentum

Chief executive officer Wallace Kou emphasized growing demand for MonTitan enterprise SSD controllers across NAND manufacturers, hyperscalers and cloud service providers.

All seven announced MonTitan customers remain on track for commercial production ramps during 2026. The company also completed tape-out of its next-generation 4nm PCIe Gen 6 controller, with sampling scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.

Management expects TLC-based enterprise SSD demand to lead near-term growth, while QLC-based storage opportunities expand as higher-density NAND becomes available. Kou expects broader adoption to strengthen MonTitan's contribution beyond 2026.

SIMO Expands Automotive and Boot Drive Opportunities

Kou highlighted Ferri automotive and enterprise boot drives as major growth engines. Combined solutions revenues increased more than 75% sequentially and represented over 40% of third-quarter sales.

Automotive products benefited from expanding customer relationships and higher margins. Management also identified opportunities in robotics, drones and advanced networking, although robotics demand remains at an early stage.

Enterprise boot drives represent another expansion opportunity. Kou expects the market for DRAM-equipped near-CPU boot drives to exceed $10 billion by 2030, with Silicon Motion targeting product ramps in the second half of 2027.

Silicon Motion Addresses Supply and Pricing Risks

During the analyst Q&A, B. Riley Securities questioned whether supply constraints could limit growth beyond management's 2027 expectations.

Kou responded that Silicon Motion has secured wafer capacity primarily through TSMC, alongside assembly, testing and substrate resources, to support its anticipated expansion.

William Blair analysts examined exposure to NAND pricing fluctuations. Kou explained that customer pricing arrangements generally span six months, helping manage costs. Chief financial officer Jason Tsai added that normalization of storage specifications and new customer programs could support growth even if NAND prices stabilize.

SIMO Details Funding and Consumer Market Pressures

Management acknowledged continuing weakness in smartphones and PCs as elevated memory prices pressure device affordability. Kou expects eMMC and UFS controller demand to remain relatively flat near term.

In contrast, PCIe Gen 5 controller adoption offers higher average selling prices and additional market share opportunities. Management expects the technology's PC market penetration to reach 20% to 25% by the end of 2027.

Responding to working-capital questions, Tsai said the company's $1.15 billion convertible-note financing should support anticipated funding requirements for the next couple of years. Inventory conversion remains an important consideration as solutions revenues expand.

Silicon Motion Focuses on More Diversified Growth

Management's overarching message centered on reducing dependence on consumer storage cycles through higher-value enterprise, automotive and AI applications.

Tsai emphasized that longer product lifecycles and multi-year customer engagements should improve business visibility. Management remains focused on scaling these opportunities while maintaining profitability and managing supply constraints.

What SIMO's Zacks Rank and Style Scores Indicate

SIMO currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), indicating favorable near-term earnings estimate revision trends. However, its Value Score of D and Growth and Momentum Scores of C reflect less compelling characteristics across individual investment styles. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

The stock's VGM Score of D further indicates that its combined value, growth and momentum characteristics are relatively weak. These scores temper the favorable Zacks Rank signal, as higher-ranked stocks with A or B Style Scores have historically demonstrated stronger performance potential.

Investors should also recognize that the Zacks Rank can change as analysts revise earnings estimates following the latest quarterly results and management's updated outlook.
