Zacks Initiates Coverage of UNTC With Neutral Recommendation

Read MoreHide Full Article

Zacks Investment Research has recently initiated coverage of Unit Corporation (UNTC - Free Report) with a “Neutral” recommendation. The Tulsa, OK-based oil and natural gas producer benefits from improving operating profitability, a debt-free balance sheet, substantial liquidity and a streamlined business model. However, declining production volumes, reduced development spending and exposure to commodity price fluctuations present challenges to sustained growth.

Unit Corp operates through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Unit Petroleum Company, with producing assets primarily located in Oklahoma and Texas. Following the October 2025 divestiture of its contract drilling business for $119.7 million, the company has sharpened its focus on upstream operations, creating opportunities for improved cost efficiency and capital allocation.

Improving profitability is a key investment positive. In the second quarter of 2026, Unit Corp's operating income surged approximately 77% year over year to $14.5 million, supported by 16% revenue growth and a 13% reduction in operating expenses. General and administrative expenses declined 43%, reflecting benefits from the company's simplified operating structure.

Stronger oil realizations have further supported performance. Average realized oil prices increased 50% year over year to $93.77 per barrel in the second quarter, while oil production rose 2%. Sustained favorable pricing could bolster upstream revenues and cash generation, although hedging arrangements may limit some upside.

The research report highlights several key factors that could drive Unit Corp’s growth. UNTC's financial position provides another layer of support. As of June 30, 2026, the company held $189.6 million in cash and cash equivalents, with no outstanding long-term debt. During the first half of 2026, it distributed $24.8 million in dividends and repurchased $1.3 million worth of shares, demonstrating its commitment to shareholder returns.

However, potential investors should consider certain risks outlined in the report. Production weakness remains concerning. Total output declined 8% year over year in the second quarter, led by lower natural gas and natural gas liquids production. Capital expenditure also fell to $5.7 million in the first half of 2026 from $15.1 million a year earlier, raising questions about future production replacement and reserve development.

Meanwhile, rising operating costs, softer natural gas realizations and limited business diversification could pressure margins. Commodity hedges provide some cash flow stability but restrict the company's ability to fully capitalize on stronger oil prices.

From a valuation perspective, UNTC trades at 2.61 times trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA, below the industry average of 5.93 times. Its enterprise value-to-sales multiple of 1.20 is also substantially below the industry average of 5.52, suggesting a relatively modest valuation. However, production challenges and commodity exposure warrant a measured assessment.
