US Foods Holding Corp. (USFD - Free Report) delivered a stronger fiscal second quarter, with higher earnings, accelerating independent restaurant demand and wider margins. Management also reaffirmed its fiscal 2026 outlook despite continued pressure on restaurant industry traffic.
The quarter strengthens the case that US Foods is gaining traction in targeted customer segments and converting that growth into better profitability. The durability of those gains, however, still depends on sustained productivity and disciplined cost control.
US Foods Holding Corp. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Adjusted earnings were $1.44 per share, up 21% from $1.19 a year earlier. The result topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 5.1%, while net sales increased 4.5% to $10.53 billion.
Adjusted EBITDA rose 10.2% to a record $604 million. The combination of faster earnings growth and higher EBITDA points to better operating execution even as the broader restaurant environment remains uneven.
US Foods’ Restaurant Mix Drove Case Growth
Total case volume increased 1.9% in the quarter. Independent restaurant volume climbed 5.1%, healthcare advanced 3.5% and hospitality rose 4.4%, showing that the company’s targeted customer groups remained the main source of growth.
Chain restaurant volume fell 1.5%, underscoring the continued pressure in parts of foodservice demand. The competitive backdrop also remains active. Sysco Corporation (SYY - Free Report) reported 2.5% U.S. Foodservice volume growth in its fiscal fourth quarter, while Performance Food Group Company (PFGC - Free Report) posted 5.8% organic independent Foodservice case growth in its fiscal fourth quarter.
USFD’s Margin Expansion Showed Operating Leverage
Adjusted gross profit increased 6.9% to $1.91 billion, outpacing sales growth. Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 29 basis points to 5.7%, while adjusted gross profit per case increased 5%.
Strategic vendor management and inventory initiatives helped support profitability. US Foods generated more than $50 million of strategic vendor-management cost-of-goods savings in the first half of fiscal 2026. Productivity gains also helped offset operating inflation, although adjusted operating expenses per case still increased 3.7%.
US Foods Reaffirmed Its 2026 Growth Outlook
Management maintained its fiscal 2026 expectations for net sales growth of 4-6%, adjusted EBITDA growth of 9-13% and adjusted earnings growth of 18-24%. The outlook also assumes total case volume growth of 2.5-4.5%.
The guidance includes a 53rd week, which is expected to add about one percentage point to total case growth and adjusted EBITDA growth. That contribution is important when evaluating underlying growth, particularly while restaurant traffic remains pressured and chain volumes are still declining.

USFD’s Style Scores Temper the Earnings Read-Through
The bottom line is that the fiscal second quarter showed tangible operating progress. Faster independent restaurant growth, higher gross profit and margin expansion support the view that US Foods’ self-help initiatives are producing measurable benefits, but demand and cost pressures remain relevant.
USFD currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). The stock has a Growth Score of A, Momentum Score of B and VGM Score of A, pointing to favorable growth and momentum characteristics. Its Value Score of C is more neutral. Because the Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank, the current combination favors caution in treating one strong quarter as a sufficient reason to expect near-term outperformance.
