Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Palantir's Q3 earnings surged 109.5% year over year, while revenues jumped 96% to $2.3 billion.
  • PLTR's commercial and government revenues topped $1 billion each, while net dollar retention reached 165%.
  • Palantir raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $8.530-$8.534 billion.

Palantir Technologies Inc. (PLTR - Free Report) delivered an earnings beat in the third quarter of 2026, supported by accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, expanding commercial demand and higher government spending. Revenue growth reached a record level, while profitability and cash generation improved alongside business expansion.

The company also raised its full-year outlook, reflecting sustained demand for its AI platforms. However, rising operating expenses, shorter contract durations and growing dependence on the U.S. market warrant attention. With momentum continuing across major business lines, investors must assess whether the earnings performance justifies a more bullish stance on PLTR stock.

PLTR's Q3 Earnings Beat Reinforces Growth Momentum

Palantir reported quarterly earnings of 44 cents per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 41 cents by 7.3%. Earnings more than doubled from 21 cents in the year-ago quarter, representing approximately 109.5% year-over-year growth.

The performance extended Palantir's record of exceeding consensus EPS expectations to four consecutive quarters. In the preceding quarter, earnings of 41 cents surpassed expectations of 35 cents, producing a 17.1% surprise.

Revenues reached $2.3 billion, exceeding the consensus estimate of approximately $2.2 billion by 6.5%. The figure represented 96% year-over-year growth from approximately $1.2 billion and a 20% sequential increase.

Revenue growth accelerated from 93% in the second quarter, indicating that enterprise AI adoption continued to translate into higher spending. The combination of earnings beats and sequential revenue expansion suggests that customer demand has remained ahead of market expectations.

Commercial Expansion and U.S. Demand Accelerate

Palantir's third-quarter revenue mix reflected increasing contributions from commercial customers. Commercial revenues reached $1.17 billion, while government revenue stood at $1.15 billion. Both businesses exceeded $1 billion in quarterly revenues for the first time.

U.S. revenues totaled approximately $1.9 billion, accounting for 84% of consolidated revenue, compared with more than 81% in the preceding quarter. This indicates a sequential increase in the company's geographic concentration.

Notably, U.S. commercial revenue exceeded U.S. government revenue for the first time, marking an important shift in Palantir's growth profile.

Demand for Sovereign AI and enterprise software deployments continued to support new contracts. One industrial customer expanded an initial engagement worth nearly $3 million into an agreement carrying approximately $29 million in annual contract value.

Third-quarter total contract value bookings reached $2.9 billion, equivalent to approximately 1.26 times quarterly revenues. Net dollar retention increased to 165% from 157% in the second quarter, an 800-basis-point sequential improvement.

This retention performance indicates that existing customers are expanding spending, reinforcing the potential for recurring revenue growth.

Operating Profitability Strengthens Despite Higher Spending

Palantir reported third-quarter GAAP operating income of $1.08 billion, crossing the $1 billion threshold for the first time. Based on revenue of $2.31 billion, the reported figures imply a GAAP operating margin of approximately 46.9%.

Operating cash flow reached $1.205 billion, equivalent to approximately 52.1% of quarterly revenue. This level of cash generation provides additional capacity to fund platform development and customer implementations.

Nevertheless, adjusted operating expenses increased 20% sequentially to $887 million. Higher technology investment and technical hiring contributed to the increase.

The matching sequential growth rates in revenue and adjusted expenses suggest that continued operating leverage will depend on whether revenue expansion can outpace future investment requirements.

Management also highlighted shorter-than-usual contract durations among several large Sovereign AI agreements. Although these arrangements can expand over time, their initial duration creates uncertainty around revenue visibility.

Raised Guidance Supports Further Revenue Expansion

Palantir expects fourth-quarter 2026 revenues between $2.649 billion and $2.653 billion. The midpoint of $2.651 billion is approximately 14.6% above third-quarter revenues and nearly 7.9% higher than the analyst estimate of $2.456 billion.

For 2026, management increased revenue guidance to $8.530-$8.534 billion from the previous range of $8.150-$8.158 billion. The midpoint revision represents an increase of approximately $378 million, or 4.6%.

The company also raised its full-year U.S. commercial revenue outlook to more than $3.559 billion from the prior target exceeding $3.424 billion.

These revisions indicate continued commercial momentum entering the final quarter. However, the ability to maintain high growth while controlling expenses and increasing implementation capacity remains central to the longer-term earnings outlook.

How Does PLTR Compare With Microsoft and Snowflake?

Microsoft (MSFT - Free Report) and Snowflake (SNOW - Free Report) offer useful reference points for evaluating Palantir's enterprise AI opportunity. Microsoft approaches enterprise AI through its established software ecosystem and cloud infrastructure, while Snowflake focuses on cloud-based data management and analytics. Palantir's differentiation rests on integrating AI into operational workflows and converting initial deployments into larger customer commitments. Unlike Microsoft, Palantir has a more concentrated revenue base, making major customer wins particularly important to its growth trajectory.

Compared with Snowflake, Palantir's government exposure provides a distinct demand channel alongside commercial expansion. Investors evaluating Microsoft and Snowflake against Palantir should consider customer retention, revenue diversification, operating margins and the sustainability of AI-related spending before drawing valuation conclusions.

Is PLTR Stock a Buy After Its Earnings Beat?

Hold appears appropriate for Palantir following its latest earnings release. Accelerating commercial adoption, expanding customer spending and rising profitability demonstrate the company's ability to monetize enterprise AI demand. Stronger guidance also supports confidence in its growth strategy. However, increasing investment requirements, shorter contract durations and substantial U.S. revenue concentration introduce risks to earnings visibility. The company's rapid expansion is encouraging, but sustaining this pace will require consistent execution and continued customer conversions. Without valuation evidence establishing an attractive entry point, the earnings beat alone does not justify a more aggressive investment stance. Existing investors may reasonably retain their positions while monitoring profitability and demand.
