APPN Subscription Growth Accelerates

Cloud subscription revenues increased 20% year over year to $136.4 million, representing 21% growth in constant currency (cc). Total subscription revenues advanced 28% to $187.8 million, or 29% in cc, supported by robust demand for cloud and self-managed software.

Cloud net ARR expansion improved from 112% in the year-ago quarter and 115% in the preceding quarter. The metric reached its highest level in more than five years, indicating stronger customer expansion and improving business momentum.

Appian Gains Traction From Enterprise AI Adoption

Appian reported more than 50% sequential growth in customer AI usage. Demand remained particularly strong among regulated enterprises seeking AI-enabled process automation, data governance and application modernization.

A North American insurer expanded its deployment of Appian’s AI-powered DocCenter after automating document processing across 100,000 files annually, increasing its spending by 86%. A European bank also expanded its licenses to deploy AI agents for compliance reviews, targeting a reduction in review times from 10 days to 30 minutes.

APPN Sees Broad-Based Revenue Strength

Professional services revenues grew 18% year over year to $46.9 million, benefiting from continued enterprise adoption. Subscription revenues accounted for approximately 80% of total revenues, highlighting the growing contribution of recurring software sales.

Management reported performance above expectations across all major geographic regions, particularly the U.S. public sector. A cabinet-level federal agency signed a seven-figure software agreement to modernize procurement, while a U.S. military branch awarded Appian a seven-figure prime contract for fleet management modernization.

Appian's Profitability Improves Despite Higher Costs

Non-GAAP gross margin remained flat year over year at 74%, improving from 72% in the preceding quarter. Subscription gross margin was 86%, unchanged year over year, while professional services gross margin declined to 24% from 31%.

Non-GAAP operating expenses increased to $132.8 million from $108.4 million a year earlier. Despite higher expenses, non-GAAP operating income rose to $40.6 million from $29.8 million.

Adjusted EBITDA increased to $43.4 million from $32.2 million, exceeding management's guidance of $30-$33 million.

APPN Cash Flow Weakens Amid Collection Timing

Appian ended September 2026 with cash, cash equivalents and investments of approximately $89 million, compared with $187 million at the end of 2025.

Operating activities used $15.4 million in cash during the quarter, against $18.7 million generated in the year-ago period. Appian attributed the decline primarily to collection timing associated with larger enterprise contracts and noted particularly strong collections in October.

The company repurchased approximately 0.5 million shares for $17 million during the quarter, bringing cumulative repurchases to $83 million under its $100 million authorization.

Appian Raises 2026 Outlook on Strong Momentum

For the fourth quarter of 2026, Appian expects cloud subscription revenues of $143-$145 million, indicating 22-24% year-over-year growth. Total revenues are projected between $233 million and $237 million, implying 15-17% growth.

Fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA is expected between $30 million and $33 million, while non-GAAP earnings are projected at 30-34 cents per share. Management expects foreign exchange movements to create a 2-3 percentage-point headwind to reported revenue growth.

For 2026, Appian raised its outlook, projecting cloud subscription revenues of $536-$538 million and total revenues of $873-$877 million. These ranges imply approximately 23% and 20%-21% year-over-year growth, respectively.

The company expects adjusted EBITDA of $116-$119 million and non-GAAP earnings of $1.20-$1.24 per share. Appian now anticipates nearly three percentage points of EBITDA margin improvement for 2026, compared with its initial expectation of one percentage point, while continuing investments in sales capacity and AI innovation.
