Welcome to Episode #505 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast.
Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, is joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds, and ETFs and how it impacts your life.
This week, Tracey was joined by Zacks Director of ETF Research, Neena Mishra, to discuss where the money went during October 2026 when technology and AI stocks sold off.
Did investors and traders stay the course in the technology stocks?
Did they continue to buy the large cap indexes like the S&P 500?
Energy has outperformed technology in 2026. Oil remained elevated in October. Did investors finally discover the energy ETFs?
Looking at the ETF Flows During October 2026
Neena gives all the juicy details about the inflows, and outflows, during the month. She also shares the “secret” ETF which is getting inflows because it owns shares of pre-IPO Anthropic.
And did you know there’s an ETF that’s up over 3,000% year-to-date but no one knows about it?
The iShares Semiconductor ETF has been around since July 2001. It has 30 holdings and includes semiconductor companies like NVIDIA, Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, Qualcomm, and others. It’s a who’s who of the semiconductor industry.
But over the last month, SOXX has fallen 33% yet Neena reports that it still gathered $3.3 billion in assets in October 2026. Investors were buying the dip.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF has an expense ratio of 0.33%.
Is the November weakness in the SOXX a buying opportunity?
What’s one of the hottest ETFs of the year? It’s the Breakwave Tanker Shipping ETF, of course.
The Breakwave Tanker Shipping ETF is designed to reflect the daily price movement of indices that track the future cost of transporting oil. Because it uses futures, it’s not designed to be used as a long-term buy and hold investment.
However, year-to-date, the BWET is up 3,380%. Although it has high returns, the BWET saw outflows in the month of October and is not a large ETF. Investors have not been chasing performance.
The Breakwave Tanker Shipping ETF is an Amplify ETF. BWET has an expense ratio of 3.5%. Neena warned on its volatility.
Should investors interested in the shipping of oil have BWET on their watch list?
Money has been flowing into the Alger Concentrated Equity ETF. At first glance, it looks like any other large cap growth ETF. It holds 30 or fewer holdings.
The Alger Concentrated Equity ETF’s largest holding is NVIDIA, which is 14.88% of the portfolio. The second largest position is Microsoft at 8.6%.
What’s so special about this ETF?
But investors have found out that Alger has a 2% position in privately held Anthropic. That is enough to get them interested.
Alger Concentrated Equity ETF has an expense ratio of 0.56%. In the last month, CNEQ is down 16.7%.
Anthropic is expected to go public in the next few weeks.
Should investors buy Alger Concentrated Equity ETF to get exposure to Anthropic?
