Read MoreHide Full Article

Shares of National Presto Industries, Inc. (NPK - Free Report) have declined 7.3% since the company reported earnings for the quarter ended Oct. 4, 2026, underperforming the S&P 500 index, which has declined 4% over the same period. Over the past month, NPK shares have fallen 4.8% compared with the S&P 500's 6% decrease, indicating relatively stronger performance over the longer period.

National Presto reported third-quarter 2026 earnings per share of $2.79, which rose from 74 cents in the prior-year period,

Net sales of $144.3 million represented a 25% increase from $115.5 million in the year-ago quarter.

Net earnings surged 275.7% year over year to $20 million from $5.3 million. The quarterly results reflected stronger operating performance, particularly in the Defense segment, alongside a tariff-related benefit in the Housewares/Small Appliance segment.

NPK's Segmental Performance

The Defense segment remained a major contributor to National Presto's quarterly revenue growth. Segment sales increased approximately $29 million, or 31.3%, from the comparable 2025 quarter, driven by increased shipments from the company's existing backlog. The improvement underscores the segment's importance to consolidated sales performance.

The Housewares/Small Appliance segment reported a modest sales decline of $0.5 million, or 2.1%, year over year. In contrast, the Safety segment recorded an 88.9% increase in sales, equivalent to approximately $0.3 million, reflecting increased distribution of its broader product lineup. However, the Safety segment's contribution to consolidated sales remained relatively small.

National Presto's Operating Earnings

Defense segment operating earnings increased $7.1 million, or 61.8%, compared with the third quarter of 2025. The improvement reflected higher shipment volumes, a more favorable product mix and increased operating efficiencies. The growth in operating earnings outpaced the segment's sales expansion, indicating improved profitability from its existing operations.

Meanwhile, the Housewares/Small Appliance segment generated operating earnings of $8.1 million, reversing a loss in the prior-year quarter. However, most of these earnings resulted from a refund of previously paid tariffs following a Supreme Court decision in February 2026 declaring those tariffs unauthorized.
Consequently, the segment's substantial earnings recovery should not be interpreted entirely as evidence of improved underlying operating conditions. The Safety segment continued to report an operating loss, consistent with management's expectations.

NPK's Management Commentary and Growth Drivers

President Maryjo Cohen attributed the Defense segment's stronger quarterly performance primarily to increased shipments from backlog. Management also highlighted favorable product mix and operational efficiencies as contributors to the segment's earnings improvement.

These developments suggest that backlog execution and manufacturing efficiency played important roles in supporting National Presto's quarterly profitability. However, the company's performance also benefited from the tariff refund, introducing a distinction between recurring operational improvements and the quarter's nonrecurring earnings benefit.

Management additionally noted that increased distribution of a broader product lineup supported Safety segment revenues, although the business remained unprofitable.
