Company Summary
Azul is one of the largest airlines in Brazil in terms of departures and destinations covered, offering flights to every region in Brazil. The company headquartered at Barueri, São Paulo was founded in January 2008 and began operations in December, the same year. The company went public in April 2017 raising $645 million through its IPO.
The company expanded significantly with the acquisition of TRIP in August 2012 and thus began international operations in December 2014. In fact, the buyout enabled Azul to serve 100 destinations and positioned it as the leading carrier with regard to departures in 71 cities.
Further the acquisition has allowed the airline to obtain strategic landing rights at Guarulhos airport in São Paulo and Santos Dumont airport in Rio de Janeiro.
The carrier intends to expand globally through code-share agreements with other carriers. The airline has code-share agreements with several international carriers such as United Airlines, JetBlue, Copa Airlines, Etihad Airways, TAP, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Aigle Azur and Beijing Capital. The code-share partnerships with United and TAP will help the company in expanding its network across United States, Europe and Asia.
Azul operates a young fleet (average age of 8.3 years at the end of 2020) to reduce trip costs so that it is better equipped to compete with the likes of GOL Linhas and Copa Holdings. The company is undertaking a fleet transformation plan to add next-generation, more fuel-efficient aircraft to its fleet by replacing older generation aircraft.
The company aims at maximizing yield through dynamic fare segmentation and demand stimulation. It provides convenient flight options to the business travelers, while offering low-cost fares to the leisure travelers. Such a dynamic pricing allows the airline to generate high passenger unit revenues.
Azul exited the fourth quarter of 2023 with a total passenger operating fleet of 183 aircraft. The average age of the fleet was 7.4 years. The contractual fleet size was 189.
