The company reports its results through the following segments:
- Rail North America (accounted for 70% of 2023 revenue) comprises of the company’s operations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, in addition to two affiliate investments. The segment is responsible for offering railcars pursuant to full-service leases . The railcars have an average age of roughly 20 years.
- Rail International (22%) comprises primarily of the company’s operations in Europe (Rail Europe). The railcar leasing business in India (Rail India) which began operating in 2012 apart from a development stage affiliate in China also fall under the segment. Rail Europe, through its service centers, is responsible for the repairs, regulatory compliance and modernization for owned railcars. The railcars have expected useful lives of 30 to 40 years apart from an average age of approximately 18 years.
- Portfolio Management (5.4%) offers operating leases, direct finance leases and loans, and extends its market reach through joint venture investments. During 2015, the company announced its plan to exit majority of its non-core, marine investments within the Portfolio Management unit. The American Steamship Company segment was sold to Rand Logistics in May 2020. Notably, the 260-million (subject to working capital and other closing adjustments) stock purchase deal was inked in February. The balance came from others.
