Company Summary
Liberty Energy (previously Liberty Oilfield Services) is a premier provider of hydraulic fracturing and other auxiliary services to onshore exploration and production (E&P) companies in North America. Hydraulic fracturing is a method used to extract oil and natural gas by blasting underground rock formations with a mixture of water, sand and chemicals.
In January 2021, Liberty acquired oilfield services giant Schlumberger’s onshore hydraulic fracturing business in the United States and Canada, known as OneStim. Thanks to this buyout, the company got hold of Schlumberger’s pressure pumping, pump-down perforating and Permian frac sand businesses. In return, Schlumberger got a 37% stake in Liberty.
The Denver, CO-based independent, pure play operates in the Permian Basin, the Eagle Ford Shale, the Denver-Julesburg (“DJ”) Basin, the Williston Basin, the San Juan Basin, the Powder River Basin, the Haynesville Shale, the Oklahoma Scoop and Stack areas, the Marcellus Shale, Utica Shale, and the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basins
It offers a wide spectrum of specialized, complementary services and equipment for exploration and production of oil and natural gas. Liberty has built a database of 1000,000+ wells, which allows it to advise clients on the best way to frack wells.
The company focuses on deploying its innovative and industry-leading technology solutions to the oil and gas industry. Liberty also holds numerous patents, which together with its technological innovation, help reduce costs and improve efficiencies of the E&P operators. The other vital aspect of the company's strategy is the development of next-generation frac fleets compliant with the environmental, social, and governance (or ESG) issues of field operations.
Liberty, which went public in 2018, had approximately $36.8 million in cash and cash equivalents at the end of 2023. The pressure pumper’s long-term debt of $140 million represented a debt-to-capitalization of 7.1%. Further, the company’s liquidity — cash balance, plus revolving credit facility — amounted to $314 million. The company generated revenues of $4.7 billion from its operations in 2023.
