National Steel Company operates throughout the entire steel production chain, from the mining of iron ore to the production and sale of a diversified range of high value-added steel products. The company operates through its five business segments: steel, mining, cement, logistics and energy.
Steel: The Steel segment comprises a portfolio of diverse products and provides an international footprint by means of international subsidiaries and exports from Brazil. In flat steel segment, National Steel Company is a fully-integrated steelmaker. Steelworks produces a broad line of steel products, including slabs, hot and cold rolled, galvanized and tin mill products for the distribution, packaging, automotive, home appliance and construction industries.
Mining: National Steel Company owns a number of high quality iron ore mines, strategically located within Brazil’s “Iron Ore Quadrangle”. In order to strengthen its position in the iron ore market, the company plans to invest in mining assets, to generate low operational costs and long-term growth opportunities.
Logistics: National Steel Company’s vertical integration strategy and the synergies among business units are strongly dependent on the logistics needed to guarantee the transportation of inputs at low cost. A number of railways and port terminals comprise the logistics system that integrates mining, steelmaking and cement units.Cement: National Steel Company entered the cement market in May 2009 in order to take advantage of the synergy potential with steelmaking business. Slag and clinker are the main inputs in cement production.
Energy: Steelmaking requires significant amounts of electricity to power rolling mills, production lines, hot metal processing, coking plants and auxiliary units. National Steel Company uses thermoelectric cogeneration power plant, which is fueled by gases from the steel production process.
