Headquartered in Providence, RI, United Natural Foods, Inc. is the leading distributor of natural, organic and specialty food and non-food products in the U.S. and Canada. The company carries more than 1,10,000 high-quality natural, organic and specialty products, consisting of national, regional and private label brands in six product categories. These categories are — grocery and general merchandise, produce, perishables and frozen foods, nutritional supplements and sports nutrition, bulk and foodservice products as well as personal care items.
From an operating point of view, the company has two principal divisions — the wholesale as well as the manufacturing and branded products unit. The company disposed the retail unit in fiscal 2018.
The company serves more than 43,000 customer locations primarily located across the United States and Canada. Based on customer groups, the company reports results under the following channels.
• Supernatural chains consist of chain accounts that are national in scope and include natural products. It solely comprises Whole Foods Market, Inc. ("Whole Foods Market");
• Chains channel consists of customers who generally operate more than 10 stores;
• Independent Retailers channel consists of customers who generally operate smaller size accounts and include single store and multiple store locations;
• Retail channel includes the Cub Foods business and major part of the remaining Shoppers locations, excluding five Shoppers locations that are held for sale;
• Other channel, which includes foodservice, e-commerce and international customers outside of Canada;
Post the buyout of SUPERVALU, United Natural has emerged as one of the largest grocery distributors in in the United States. This acquisition has provided a radical boost to the company’s portfolio. During the third quarter, the company adopted certain nomenclatures, considering that the integration of SUPERVALU has come a long way. The company will be referring to legacy UNFI business as natural, while SUPERVALU business will be termed as conventional.
