Comcast Corporation (CMCSA - Free Report) – the largest cable MSO in the U.S. –continues to expand its Xfinity WiFi services by offering its service to Wasatch Front. Xfinity Internet customers can now access the Xfinity WiFi service at no extra cost.
Comcast has already deployed 900 Xfinity WiFi hotspots in popular cities like Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo. It mostly covers important public places and neighborhood. Moreover, it offers more than 300,000 WiFi access points to its customers. In order to gain easy access and to identify WiFi hotspot locations, subscribers can also download Xfinity WiFi apps from Apple Inc.’s (AAPL - Free Report) iOS platform or from Google, Inc.’s Android market.
Comcast is also supplying cable modems to its subscribers powered with Wi-Fi routers. The Wi-Fi routers will support two signal strengths, which will serve two different functions. One of the signals will be used for domestic purposes while the other will be used publicly for sharing.
Each Comcast customer will have a separate user name and password with which they can log into the neighborhood hotspot once the Wi-Fi router-based cable modems are switched on.
Higher adoption of smartphones and tablets is continuously driving demand for data usage. So, deploying the WiFI service will help the company to offload data congestion to some extent and simultaneously reduce maintenance cost.
Such enhanced service offerings by Comcast will not only improve subscriber churn but will also safeguard its position against leading wireless operators like AT&T, Inc. (T - Free Report) and Verizon Wireless.
Currently, Comcast Corporation carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
