Software developer Microsoft Corporation (MSFT - Free Report) recently expanded a patent licensing deal with Wistron Corporation.
Per the extended agreement, Wistron will acquire a broad license to Microsoft patents, including tablets, mobile phones, e-readers, and other consumer devices running on Alphabet Inc.’s Android operating system and Chrome OS devices. This will generate additional revenues for Microsoft.
Established in 2001 and headquartered at Taiwan, Wistron is a technology service provider. It supplies information and communication technology products, services and systems to its customers. Its client base includes branded, global and regional original equipment manufacturers (OEM).
In Dec 2003, Microsoft started its Intellectual Property licensing program. Since then, the leading software company has signed more than 1,200 licensing deals. Some of its better-known licensees are Android device makers Samsung, LG, HTC, Acer and Barnes & Noble.
Microsoft is part of the Rockstar Consortium along with other technology companies like Apple Inc. (AAPL - Free Report) , Blackberry, Ericsson and Sony (SNE - Free Report) . The organization intends to enforce patents that are involved in multiple patent litigations.
